My sisters burst into my room at 8 am sharp on Christmas morning. This was a marked improvement considering I am not the kind of person to get up at the crack of dawn to see if Santa came, but I was excited nonetheless. As I rolled out of my room, I saw presents scattered around the living room floor. Mine were wrapped in the traditional green tissue paper, Annie’s were in red, Grace’s in white.
As we started opening presents, I started to notice a slight trend. Santa had been keeping the Under Armour elves quite busy.
I was gifted with a UA sweatshirt, sweatpants, a couple of Under Armour shirts a UA hat…. and a business suit, but that wasn’t Under Armour which was disappointing! 😀
When I looked around the room and realized that more than half of the family presents had been associated with Under Armour in some way, shape or form, it really made me pause and reflect on how much Under Armour had played a key part in our year this year…
From Under Armour athlete and greatest Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, calling me while at Disneyworld to give me a pep talk in April before our Half-Ironman,
to the summer, when Under Armour held a surprise party for me and Dad at the Knickerbocker, a restaurant/bar here in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where we were surrounded by hundreds of family and friends to view the commercial they made for me inspired by Michael Phelps.
In August, Dad and I decided to race the Boulder Half-Ironman and Under Armour was beside us cheering us on all the way to the finish….
Then in November, I was invited to come and speak to 200+ Under Armour employees, or teammates, as they are called on their campus in Baltimore, Maryland. ESPN’s Sportscenter host and very own, Scott Van Pelt, came in to emcee our talk and UA Founder Kevin Plank graced us with a visit. Two great people I was so honored to meet. It was a fantastic feeling being able to have the opportunity to meet them, and thank them personally for believing in TeamAgar. The whole campus made us feel like we were part of their family.
I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude for all that Under Armour has done for me this past year. They strengthened my “Armour” by giving me the proper tools necessary to help me find the “I WILL” within myself and to help me fight my most important battle… the one with the voice inside my head that says, “I can’t.”
Taking life one step a time,
In my next blog post, I will share with you why the words “I WILL”, mean so much to me in my daily life. Stay tuned!
